I think feminism unfolded differently in the east and west, because misogyny looks different in these regions.
For example, it is easy to find a western fairy tale where prince saves princess. And that’s why ‘I don’t need prince charming’ quote became so popular in the west. However, I don’t know about other parts of Asia but at least in Korea, the most famous princess story is the one where a princess saves a mediocre men and makes a great general out of him by supporting and devoting to him lol men from Korean stories are mostly basic, rather than prince charming. And that’s a huge difference. Because these traditional stories are made up basically to give lessons to kids; western girls are forced to wait for her prince charming for her happy ending and eastern girls are forced to deal with basic men and sacrifice herself so men can be great.
Like traditional western version of misogyny would be like ‘Ladies, you are all so inferior yet so precious and beautiful. Let this prince charming do all the hard work and you don’t need to worry about education and politics and such cuz wrinkles will ruin your pretty face. You can all stay in cozy home and raise children and do house chores and worry about nothing :)’
Men would take you to expensive dinner and treat you like a princess and put an expensive ring on your finger (but takes away your last name and gives his just like putting a name tag on a property) It is much easier for women to compromise with patriarchy if she has no idea what really men are up to.
And I believe this is the main reason why there are so many western liberal feminists who believe in sex empowerment and so many transgenders who want to become women so they can be treated like one cuz being a women seems very nice and pretty on the surface. This reflects that most men don’t even understand how subtle the misogyny is in Western society. You can’t see it with your bare eyes. It is literally a ‘glass’ ceiling.
Men are also comfortable with this type of misogyny cuz you can be ‘the nice guy’ while being a misogynist. And that is another reason why there are so many delusional ‘male feminists’ in the west and daddy culture is prevalent. Men are used to treat women inferior but in a ~kind~ and more manipulative way. They feel superior by treating women like a baby. And women can be easily convinced that they are being treated by men.
(Please note that I’m not trying to say that it was easier for western women. I’m saying that it was done in a boiling frog way)
Eastern (or Korean cuz again, I really don’t know about other parts of Asia) version of misogyny is more explicit and obvious. (To be fair, this came up after Korea accepted Confucianism) Men never save women in our fairy tale. Status of women was very similar to that of slave in 18th and 19th century and there is a journal written by Ernst von Hesse-Wartegg, an Austrian traveler who visited Korea(Joseon) in 19th ceutury where he wrote that he never saw men working while while women worked all day long inside and outside home. He mentioned that women were not treated better than livestock. So basically women earned bread, raised kids and took care of their families. It’s not exactly like being treated as “Angels in the House” Even in the modern history, there are so many women in our grandmother generation who never got to visit their parents ever again after marriage cuz women were considered a property of her husband’s family.
Women are not pampered in this type of patriarchy. You will be called a gold digger for expecting men to propose or pay bills on the date or take you to expensive dinner or even buy flowers. Remember, you are not an angel, you are a slave. Slaves shouldn’t want anything from their masters.
And this is why radical feminism became more dominant in Korea cuz we never had ‘prince charming’ in the first place. (Is this why there are so many lesbian radical feminists in the west? cuz they were never under the delusion of prince charming??? idk)
Being Angels in the House was enough for traditional western women to get validation and ~respect~ from men. It was never enough for Korean women. So we basically snapped at one point (after first and second wave feminism failed) and when we did, we didn’t take a single bullshit from men. And same for transgenders, there are so much less transgenders in Korea cuz many men CLEARLY know how women are treated and we are not treated like a princess. There is nothing to fetishize or romanticize. There is not a single reason for men to admire women. So I believe that this is the main difference in misogyny in the East and West.
Like, in modern society, if u ask a western male celebrity if he is happy with his marriage, he’ll say that he is the lucky one to have her and she is like his goddess even though he is beating her up at home. You ask the same question to Korean male celebrity, he’ll casually joke about how he hates to go home and deal with his wife and how she is such a bad cook and tell unmarried men that they should never get married. I’m talking about actual celebrities talking in front of a camera, not just basic man with midlife crisis.
So basically one tries to sell delusion to women and the other takes away hope from women both to make us submissive and stick to the patriarchy.
The Victorian era notion of Angel in the house was only for the wives of men of high standing.
Poorer women in Victorian England did not get the same protections of being seen as delicate angels who had to be kept inside. They had to work to survive.
Many of the men with angels in house would go to the brothels to pay to rape the women there.
There is a class system that needs to acknowledged.
oh yeah of course I recognize this! I was just simplifying the whole system. Eastern women from lower class had to endure even more humiliation, set aside the working itself.
