friendly reminder that these shelters are constantly in danger of closing due to lack of funding, since if they don’t accept government funding they will have to rely on public donations. and the trans backlash against female only spaces has contributed to them being closed 😦

Latina Girls Deserve More

wonderbreadwoman:

Jesus Christ.
I’m going to rant for a hot second.
We’re either considered too black, too Latina, or too white.
If you’re mixed, you’ll never be considered a part of either culture.
Lighter skinned babies are idolized, but when they grow up, they’re no longer Hispanic enough.
Afro Latinas are too dark for many to consider Hispanic but not often considered a part of the black community.
LBTP+ Latinas are rarely recognized in LGBT+ groups and organizations.
Even light skinned Latinas are ignored by white feminists.
The “chola” style is ridiculed and considered “ghetto”, but fashionable on white girls.
Thick eyebrows on Latina girls are made fun of but on whites it’s yet another fashion statement.
The most famous and incredibly talented Latina artist is only noted for her eyebrows and not her art or story.
Speaking with a heavy accent is ridiculed.
Not speaking Spanish is ridiculed.
Deportation jokes, especially towards Mexicans, are considered ok by society.
Indigenous descent isn’t considered “native” to white standards.

I have so much more I am so angry.

Honestly, as a German I can not quite understand the obsession of the English speaking world with the question whether a word exists or not. If you have to express something for which there is no word, you have to make a new one, preferably by combining well-known words, and in the very same moment it starts to exist. Agree?

Deutsche Freunde, could you please create for me a word for the extreme depression I feel when I bend down to pick up a piece of litter and discover two more pieces of litter?

    • um = around
    • die Welt = world
  • die Umwelt = environment
    • ver = prefix to indicate something difficult or negative, a change that leads to deterioration or even destruction that is difficult to reverse or to undo, or a strong negative change of the mental state of a person
    • der Müll = garbage, trash, rubbish, litter
    • -ung = -ing
  • die Vermüllung = littering
    • ver- = see before
    • zweifeln = to doubt
    • -ung = see before
  • die Verzweiflung = despair, exasperation, desperation

die Umweltvermüllungsverzweiflung = …

This is a german compound on the spot master class and I am LIVING

German has a prefix for WHAT now??

ver-:

  1. a prefix characterizing the word as negative or difficult

  2. a prefix denoting a movement of the object
  3. a prefix denoting that the object is provided with something
  4. a prefix describing a (mostly negative) transition of the object
into a state, which is indicated by the stem of the verb (up to its
    destruction)
  5. a prefix describing misconduct or malfunction of the object
  6. a prefix indicating a faulty action (best example: sich verlaufen =
to get lost; derived from laufen = to walk, to run; sich =
    indication of a reflexive verb
  7. a prefix that determines
that a strong, hard-to-make change has a strong influence on the
physical or mental state of someone or something (best
example: sich verlieben = to fall in love; derived from lieben = to
    love)
  8. a prefix having no special meaning in many verbs, equivalent to the
    English for- (e.g. forgive)

The world is burning, and we want your rage.

Let’s try this again. Over the summer, we tried to garner enough submissions to make a radical feminist magazine possible. Unfortunately, we did not receive enough submissions, but we are determined to make this project a reality.

Angry women are encouraged to submit pieces for consideration for the January 2019 issue of Radfem Magazine.

Who can apply?

Radfem Magazine is open to submissions by women and girls only.

What sort of submissions are welcome?

In short, anything that can be represented in a two-dimensional, static format. If that sounds vague, we intend it to be. Poetry, short stories, articles, photography, visual art—even sculpture as long as you can take a photograph of it.

Does my piece need to stick to a certain subject matter?

We’re looking for pieces that express the lived experiences of women and girls. What that means is up to you. We want to see your sorrow, your heartbreak, and in this turbulent political climate, we definitely want to see your rage.

When is the submissions deadline?

December 31st, 2018.

Apply here or go to radfemcoalition.org/mag for more details.

There are only three more weeks remaining to submit your piece for consideration in the upcoming issue of Radfem Magazine!
